In her studio, paintings are started by spontaneous reactions to colors, carried forward by active brushwork and elaborated line, and resolved through a quest for harmony of composition and mood. Pictures are often painted over, corrected, painted over again, touched here and there. The method reveals a restlessness of spirit and a useful visual curiosity; thus her repertory of markings is wide and diverse, including dabs and pats of paint, sweeping calligraphic lines, bursts and zigzags of heavy pigment. The same searching, experimental manner can also be seen in Chinyee's expansive acceptance of many media; in her work one finds oils, acrylic, watercolor, ink, crayon, oilstick, and collage, sometimes mixed together in single pieces.
